In the wake of the recent Israeli settlement-breaking in the West Bank and annexation of the Palestinian territories, the Palestinian musical scene has faced a significant decline.
Many artists who previously played on Israeli and European tour buses have either left the country or opted to play abroad, including Palestinian-American singer/songwriter Jamal Rashid.
The singer/writer’s latest album, The Story of Palestine, which was released in February, was released by independent label Diversion and was a strong success.
The album is available on Spotify and has been downloaded more than 8 million times.
The song “The Story of my Country” was featured in the 2017 Emmy Awards.
“I never thought I would be able to make a living from music,” Rashid told Al Jazeera.
“I’m a Palestinian, I’ve been to Palestine for 50 years.
I’ve never thought that I would become a singer, and I’m not here to make any money.”
In recent years, the number of Palestinian artists has grown.
In 2014, the music industry was estimated to be worth around $5 billion and there were around 1,500 Palestinian artists on the Billboard 200.
“The number of artists that are becoming mainstream and getting paid, it’s been exponential,” Rashideh said.
“It’s a sad fact that there are so many Palestinian artists who are not getting paid.”‘
I’m not looking to be an idol’Rashid has been a regular visitor to Israel since he was a teenager.
He attended university in the occupied West Bank, where he studied music and dance.
But his dreams for his career came about after the two Israeli soldiers who were killed in the 1967 Six Day War, captured by Palestinian resistance fighters, were released from jail.
In the wake and following the liberation of the territories, Rashid, who was raised in the same village as the Israeli soldiers, started recording music in hopes of making it on the international stage.
“After that, it became more and more important for me to be a singer and to become a musician,” he said.
“But I never thought of myself as an idol.
I’m a person who’s been around the world for so long, and there’s so many things I can’t give away.”‘
The truth about the Israeli occupation’Ridid is one of several artists who has returned to the Palestinian landscape, even if he has found it more difficult to find success than before.
“We don’t have the same opportunities as in the past,” he added.
“And we have a new reality.”
The number and importance of Palestinian musicians has also been reflected in the way they are portrayed in Israeli media.
“There is a whole narrative that we are only a little bit different,” said Rashid of Israeli media portrayals of Palestinians.
“It’s always an Israeli perspective, and it’s not the reality.”
Rashidi, a founding member of the music collective Jamiya, which released a song called “No Land for You” in 2013, believes that it is important for Palestinians to be able get out of the shadows and speak up.
“This is the truth about Israel,” he told Aljazeera.
“You can’t be an Arab and be a Palestinian.
There are no borders here.””
I feel like I’m living in a dream world, where there is no truth.
And I’m tired of it.”
