In the U.S., where the first music service launched in 2016, Spotify launched as a free service in 2017, followed by Pandora, and then Apple Music.
The U.K. was the first country to launch a music streaming service in 2018.
Now, Spotify has gone the route of the old-fashioned radio station.
It announced Tuesday that it has been acquired by Google, making it the first major music streaming company to go public.
Spotify is valued at $17.5 billion.
But it has struggled to keep up with Apple Music, Pandora, Tidal and Google Play Music.
Spotify also has had to contend with piracy, which is hurting the company’s business.
Spotify has had a long history of growing its music catalog.
The company’s founders started streaming music in 2004.
In 2012, they said they hoped to create a new streaming service to compete with Spotify.
Spotify began as a subscription service in 2016.
Now the service is free.
